Last week, Roth&Co was back in Chicago for the @Illinois Municipal League’s 113th Annual Conference, marking our third year attending!
@Aaron Donnelly, @Darlene Dizon, CPA, @Syndelle Manuel, CPA, and @Zehava \(Schuman\) Reischer, CPA represented Roth&Co, joining more than 2,000 local officials at one of Illinois’ largest municipal events.
Over the course of the conference, our team had the chance to catch up with longtime clients, meet new people, and have some great conversations with professionals from across the government sector.
One of our favorite parts of attending IML each year is getting to connect face-to-face with the people and communities we work with throughout Illinois.
Thank you to the Illinois Municipal League for another great conference. We loved being back and look forward to doing it again next year!

After Nick Shirley’s fraud investigations sparked a national firestorm, California passed a new law expanding privacy protections for certain workers in the nonprofit and healthcare sectors.
Supporters say it’s about safety. Critics say it could make accountability harder.
And the timing is raising even more questions, as federal authorities move in the opposite direction and push for greater scrutiny and transparency.
So what exactly does AB 2624 change, and why has it become so controversial?

A $3,400 scholarship tax credit? Treasury’s new rules explain who could qualify. Treasury and the IRS released new …read more
Treasury and the IRS released new federal scholarship tax-credit rules on October 1. Scholarship-granting organizations, or SGOs, are nonprofits that use donations to fund scholarships for eligible students’ K–12 education expenses.
Here are the top headlines for donors, families, and SGOs:
• Married couples filing jointly could claim up to $3,400 for qualifying contributions.
• Donors could claim the federal credit even if their home state has not opted in, by contributing to an approved SGO in a participating state.
• A student’s state of residence generally determines scholarship eligibility, even when the school is across state lines.
• SGOs could operate across participating states without an office in each one. The proposed rules also require annual financial and programmatic audits.

For scholarship-granting organizations: https://lnkd.in/grqCJq3a
The comprehensive rules remain proposed and may change. Roth&Co will share further analysis in the coming days.

Missing a portability election. Letting beneficiary designations go stale. Owning life insurance personally. Assuming today’s $15 million exemption means the planning is already taken care of.

Roth&Co was back once again at the Upward Softball Tournament in Chicago, and this year brought out 1,000+ people for a full day of softball, family fun, and some serious competition.
We sponsored the Recovery Tent, where players \(and everyone else!\) could take a break and recharge with massages, IV drips, smoothies, food, and swag for both kids and adults alike.
But the best part of the day is the reason behind it. Upward supports the mental health and well-being of children and young adults in the Chicago community, and we’re proud to be part of an event that brings so many people together for such an important cause.
Congrats to the winning team, @exacare ai and to everyone who hit the field and made it such a great day!
We’re already looking forward to next year!
